Championship football club Coventry City have decided to set ticket prices for the Championship game against West Bromwich Albion later this month and the Boxing Day match with Swansea City at £45. This is down to the club “optimising where we can optimise”. Local derbies attract more interest and away supporters are generally prepared to pay more for tickets. You could say that some fans might be prepared to pay more than £45 to watch their team at Coventry City.

The English Premier League (EPL) has had a £30 cap in place for away fan tickets since 2016-17 and voted unanimously to keep that for 2025-26 season. Currently, there is no cap on away tickets in the Championship, meaning the price can vary. It has led to calls from some West Brom fans to boycott the trip to the CBS Arena, Coventry City’s home ground where 3,000 tickets allocated to away supporters.

Coventry v West Bromich Albion– away ticket prices

Coventry owner Doug King has said the presence of a cap on away ticket prices in the EPL is easy to justify when they have signed a new £6.7bn TV rights deal that sees the club finishing bottom of the Premier League this season receiving around £120m. If away tickets were left to the market it might be a different price especially in the EPL. Above is a graph behind Coventry City’s decision.
