Dear Reader,

We are happy to share that the first volume of the Mozhi Prize Anthology is now available on pre-order from South Side Books. This anthology features nine short stories in translation, bringing together the works of eminent and emerging Tamil writers.

The Mozhi Prize is a one-of-a-kind award that recognises new and exciting talent in translation. In this collection of diverse stories that made it to the shortlist of the first edition of the prize, read about a village deity’s desperate attempts to salvage its position in the hierarchy of veneration, a woman’s deep connection with the cotton she grows at great peril to her own self, a mad carpenter who cannot fix an ordinary ladder but carves a stunning figurine of his favourite gods, and more. Here is the table of contents, for those of you who may be curious about the list of stories featured:

About Mozhi & the Mozhi Prize

‘Mozhi’ is a space between languages that enables meaningful conversations about literature from all parts of India. Regional literary voices often remain unheard outside their language boundaries. Through translations and thoughtful discourse, Mozhi hopes to spotlight significant voices across Indian languages. Here’s an exciting collection of stories translated from Tamil, marking the first edition of Mozhi’s journey across Indian languages.

“A well-curated collection of stories in Tamil, many of which I hadn’t read before. I had the pleasure of experiencing, as a reader, the ethos, milieu and registers of a familiar culture ably transported into another language.” ~ N Kalyan Raman, Tamil-English translator

“I was very impressed with the range of stories chosen and the brilliance of so many of the translations…The act of translation is both a privilege and a labour of love, and perhaps ever more urgent in the times we live in.” ~ Deepa Bhasthi, Kannada-English translator

“The Mozhi Prize…is an excellent initiative and needs to be encouraged.” ~ A Muttulingam, Tamil writer
