Readers Write In #670: An awareness post regarding the spam calls people are getting

hi all – A few days back i got an automated call stating that my number is going to be deactivated and press 9 for more information. When i pressed 9, i was told that my aadhar has been misused by someone else in getting a new phone number and using that phone number illegal messages are getting sent and there is a police case against me and i have to either come personally to a mumbai police station or take a skype call. i got into the skype call only to realize that i’m about to get cheated. The guys who speak as police officers and the telecom operator sound very persuasive, and you get sucked into it. What if it is actually an authentic phone call, they even showed a fake police constable. And a fake wireless call in the background to a cyber crime inspector to get details regarding a fake canara bank (against my name) account that is used for money laundering . So please be aware of such automated calls. And never entertain them.

Police reprimanded me that why did i entertain such call and asked me to educate others as well. And from my friends i hear that these kind of calls are on the raise.

Few days back I got a similar call stating that a Fedex parcel in my name was blocked by Mumbai police because of suspicion of contraband, that time I knew it was fake. But this time since they mentioned that my aadhar is getting misused and sounded more plausible, I got sucked into it.

These scams may be quite old but the scamsters are getting more brazen. So please educate your family, especially senior citizens in your house.
